It is easy to get caught up looking for the large mammals—the towering giraffe, the elusive kudu, the grazing zebra. But if you sit still on your private patio at Rocking Giraffe Bush Lodge, you will soon realize that the bushveld holds a different kind of magic, painted in brilliant flashes of color and song.
A Birder's Paradise at the Lodge
You don't need to travel to the Marico Eye to experience world-class birding. The lodge grounds themselves are an active sanctuary. Set among ancient Camelthorn and Sweet Thorn trees, our gardens and natural bushveld boundaries attract a phenomenal variety of bird species daily.
Wake up to the iconic call of the African Hoopoe or the cheerful duet of the Crimson-breasted Shrike. Throughout the day, watch the iridescent flashes of Malachite Sunbirds darting between the aloes, or spot a Woodland Kingfisher taking a strategic dive.
"To know the birds of the Marico is to know the changing of the seasons, the coming of the rains, and the very heartbeat of the bush."
The Butterfly Capital
Something truly unique to the Marico region—and often surprising to our guests—is the staggering diversity of its butterfly population. The transitional zone between the Kalahari and the Highveld creates a micro-habitat that supports an incredible variety of Lepidoptera.
During the warmer months, especially after the first summer rains, the bush bursts into life. You will see clouds of the golden African Migrant, the striking patterns of the Citrus Swallowtail, and if you are lucky, the rare localized Marico Copper.
These delicate creatures are more than just beautiful; they are a sign of a healthy, thriving ecosystem. Because our lodge is solar powered and respects the natural flora, we provide a perfect haven for them to flourish.
Tips for Viewing
The best way to enjoy the birds and butterflies is simply to be still. Pour a cup of coffee at sunrise, find a comfortable spot on the viewing deck or by your chalet, and let the wildlife come to you.
- Early Morning (06:00-08:00) — The best time for bird calls and spotting insect-eaters on the hunt.
- Mid-day Heat — Perfect for watching butterflies congregating near damp soil or specific flowering bushes.
- Late Afternoon — Watch the swallows and swifts performing their acrobatic routines as the sun begins to dip.
Don't forget to pack your binoculars and a good field guide. And if you capture a great photo, be sure to share it with us!
